The unfortunate consequence of developing such good techniques and excellent implants that make successful fusion more and more possible is that all the stress from the motion that the fused disc space used to experience prior to fusion now must go to the level above or below. This can accelerate the wear and tear of the lumbar spine at other levels such that you may need second surgery to fuse that additional level. |
